Our journey in Naples starts with a light, soaked in rum babà and a flaky sfogliatella filled with ricotta because in Naples, dessert doesn’t wait for the end of the meal. Food is not just nourishment here; it’s identity, ritual, and pure joy. And that theme follows you everywhere.

Food, Food, and More Food

Naples is unapologetically obsessed with food. From street vendors to historic bakeries, every corner tempts you. One of the highlights was Zia Esterina, the woman behind one of the city’s most beloved specialties: pizza fritta. Golden, puffed, indulgent and deeply comforting, this fried pizza is Neapolitan street food at its best, proof that simplicity, when done right, can be unforgettable.

Beneath the Streets: Napoli Sotterranea

Forty meters underground lies Napoli Sotterranea, a hidden city carved into volcanic stone, a place where Naples quite literally reveals its other life. What began as a vast system for water storage slowly evolved into something far more complex, serving the city through centuries of change.

At its heart were ancient wells, once narrow shafts no more than one meter by one meter, used to draw water from deep underground. Everything changed in the 1940s during the Second World War, when these spaces became air-raid shelters. To accommodate entire families, many wells were rapidly widened to three meters by three. People lived down here for months, creating a strange underground routine of daily life, fear, and resilience.

Despite the harsh conditions, traces of humanity remain. Artists would sometimes sketch portraits on the walls, perhaps to kill time, perhaps to leave a piece of themselves behind in this hidden world beneath Naples.

We also learned about the legend of the Munaciello, a mysterious figure deeply rooted in Neapolitan folklore. Originally a pozzaro, a man who worked in the wells, he wore a hooded garment called a saio, making him resemble a monk. The name Munaciello comes from Neapolitan dialect and means “little monk.” According to legend, this mischievous spirit could bring either good fortune or trouble.

Napoli Sotterranea isn’t just a visit underground, it’s a journey through survival, superstition, and the layered soul of the city itself.

Artisans, Imagination, and Presepi

Back above ground, we wandered through Via San Gregorio Armeno, famous for its handcrafted presepi (nativity scenes). But these aren’t your traditional figurines; Neapolitan artisans add politicians, celebrities, footballers, and pop-culture icons, blending sacred tradition with sharp humor.

The Most Beautiful Subway Station in the World?

We visited what The Daily Telegraph once called the most beautiful subway station in Europe, if not the world. Beyond its striking design, the station is also home to a cosmic-ray detector installed by the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, quietly studying the universe beneath the chaos of daily commuters. Only in Naples do science, art, and everyday life intersect in surprising and unexpected ways.

Grand Galleries and Local Icons

Exploring further, we stumbled upon the Galleria Umberto I, a spectacular 19th-century arcade that rivals Milan’s famous gallery in elegance and scale.

At the Duomo di Napoli, we paid a visit to someone Neapolitans love: San Gennaro, the city’s patron saint. His blood, preserved in a vial, is believed to liquefy during special ceremonies – a miracle locals watch closely, because Naples’ fortune is said to depend on it.

Not far away, we encountered the godlike figure Diego Maradona. In Naples, Maradona is not just a football legend; he’s adored, revered, and immortalized in murals, shrines, and everyday conversation. His presence still pulsates through the city.

Naples is messy, passionate, artistic, loud, deeply traditional, and wildly alive. And that’s exactly why it stays with you long after you leave.
